Follow-up Comment #5, bug #42669 (project octave):

That works for me.

Try apt-get install --reinstall libgraphicsmagick3 libgraphicsmagick++3. These
packages should already be installed as a dependency of octave but something
on your system may be messed up. These are the library packages that supply
the undefined symbol in your error message.
