Follow-up Comment #1:

This is confirmed on a recent tip of the development version (8/9/10).

As a workaround, use the fontname{NAME} command to specify a non-Greek,
non-symbol font.

For example,

xlabel('{fontname{Helvetica} Angle} alpha')
