it can be even worse...
in xterm, colors 0 through 15 are dependant on the background color...
with a dark background, colors 0, 7, 8 and 15 are bright gray, black, white and
dark gray
with a light background, colors 0, 7, 8 and 15 are black, bright gray, gray and
white
