I only removed them from the unbraced form: $.  , not from the form
with braces: ${.}  .

Except for the &$... cases.  No?  Or don't they make sense?

But it will probably be cheaper to replace the "\$?" in the first two
regexes with a "|&$" at the end of the third regex.
