There could be a "noversion" setting similar to nohelp and morespace. Or maybe
a compile-time option enables the code to display version, then your installed
version shows nothing while dev builds enable the version display code.
It doesn't need to be replaced with anything, yet. Maybe some future feature
can find a good use for the space, but right now is about removing irrelevant
text from the UI.
