Well, yes.  But that is my favourite docstring: the triple quotes
on lines by themselves.  :)

Well, comment #7 says that the patch is "costly", but I doubt that
it will be noticeably slower than the current method of invalidating
the precalculations and then recalculating them (possibly wrongly) on
the fly.  I think that up to ten, twenty, thirty thousand lines the
difference will be hardly noticeable.  Could you try?  Could apply
the patch and rehearse it on a testing file that consists of ten
concatenated copies of your real pgm file?
