I cannot reproduce this in an xterm, only in a Gnome
Terminal.  There I can pretty "reliably" make nano crash
(or at least show the text of the file) with the above
sequence of commands and then pushing and keep pushing
to make the window as narrow as possible.  Somehow the
Terminal resists being made narrower than 19 columns.

However, I begin to suspect that this a bug in ncurses.
It is not nano showing the contents of the file, but
ncurses messing up and spuriously showing some old
contents of the screen.
