Oops, that wasn't accurate.  The expression 

> >     color green "\<float|char|int|void\>"

without parentheses means
        'float' as the prefix of a word, or
        'char' anywhere, or
        'int' anywhere, or
        'void' as the suffix of a word.
The parentheses serve to group the keywords together.
