Please don't use tilde (~) as it is a shortcut for the home directory in a lot of shells! I can see that being catastrophic ;-)
Using '-' may cause problems as well as it is often used as an option introduction sequence. The normal pattern for using '-' is to terminate the option lists with '--' and then allow the use of '-' afterwards - maybe consider that as an mechanism ?
