The alpha build failures have different symptoms; until proven
otherwise I'm assuming it's a different bug (#464884).

If you have the ability to do experimental builds on alpha or s390 I
would appreciate your trying different optimization levels and
different versions of the compiler - I suspect that both of the
FTBFSes are miscompilation.  (If you try this with 0.40-3 please be
aware that you need to re-run automake between unpack and build, this
should have been in the diff.gz but wasn't.)
