Daniel - I got this to work by configuring this alert:
Any Host --> Any Service --> Any State --> Monit reachable

If you select monit from the list of services, there is no "Monit reachable" event available in the events drop down menu. Not sure if that's intentional or not.

Martin - one more question: can I change how long mmonit waits before it sends this alert? I'd like to change if from 3 failed heartbeats to something longer.

I was wondering about this too, as I didn't get any notification when
a node went down. I don't have a "Monit reachable" in the Events menu.
