I different interim solution would be to use the --disable-asm configuration switch in x264.mk. That way we get an un-optimized (but working) version of the package.

Thanks Niels, I've committed that [1], but it will be a problem since we're using Debian stable+backports as the baseline for requirements[2]. There's been some sort of change in the way backports work, though I'm not familiar enough with Debian to know what it is.

This is long standing problem[3], and I've started experimenting with native builds that look quite promising so far[4].
