Thanks for bringing this to my attention. The configure script needed some changes for -debug-and-release, which are now in the development repo:

You can get the changes with the usual "hg pull -u".

but generates another bug (not present in the last beta1), when I try to compile with svg suport:

/opt/mingw/usr/i686-pc-mingw32/lib/libQtSvg.a(qsvghandler.o):qsvghandler.cpp:(.text+0x2de): undefined reference to `__imp___Z7qstrtodPKcPS0_Pb'

Before we get too far with this, I should ask if you have looked at step 5b in the tutorial.
You can find that for development version in doc/index.html
