Thanks - that sounds like it could be the problem. I cannot find that package 
to install though. It's not in the standard repos, either base or EPEL. Seems 
they didn't include the python bindings. I can download the RPM for Fedora but 
it's not available at the same version as the other parts of gstreamer1 I have 
already installed (i.e. 1.0.7) and complains about dependencies/versions when I 
try and install.

I can't even find mention of this 1.0.7 version at the source code site 
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/gstreamer/gst-python/ to try and build it myself.

Am I simply making life too hard trying to use CentOS? It my first choice of 
distro but maybe I need to make an exception for Mediagoblin.

You have gstreamer-python installed (for gstreamer 0.10), but check you have 
python-gstreamer1 installed (that's the name of the package under
Fedora)
