I'm wondering if we might not be able to use a convenience wrapper around It's a pretty short script as it is.

from django.core import management

if __name__ == "__main__":

    if management.get_version == '1.2':
       import sys
       if 'makemessages' in sys.argv:
       ...... walk tree using find / sed, or the python equivalent

That is if we know which django versions exhibit this behaviour, a small script like this derived from could do away with this warning in README. Given that people in general don't tend to Read The Fine Manual, it might be something worth considering?
