consider the following:

$ ./configure --with-override-dir="override_dir"

$ tree /tmp/mp/
/tmp/mp/
├── man1
│   └── man.1.gz
├── man7
│   └── man.7.gz
└── override_dir
    └── man7
        └── man.7.gz

$ MANPATH=/tmp/mp man -wa man
/tmp/mp/override_dir/man7/man.7.gz
/tmp/mp/man1/man.1.gz
/tmp/mp/man7/man.7.gz


I would expect "/tmp/mp/man1/man.1.gz" to be on top.

You should compare not only source->name, but also source->ext
and source->sec in cand1_differs_by_override_dir() function.
