I'm using command line version of Lynx Version 2.8.8rel.1.  I was using 
lynx-current a few days ago I think that matched your version and though I 
had difficulties logging in was able to do it twice.  Why would I be able 
to log in with lynx-current and not with lynx release?  When I did the log 
in with lynx-current I first hit control-u in the username field since 
only a single space showed up on the screen for the field.  I can replace 
release with current and try hitting rightarrow in that field since that 
gets the expected underline characters to appear as well as the control-u 
and see if I can log in that way.  Thanks much, this has been highly 
informative and I'll probably be able to even help out google 
accessibility with what I've learned here about ajax and lynx for the lynx 
user community.
