It would be nice to get the version, e.g., "lynx -version":

        Lynx Version 2.8.9dev.2 (12 Mar 2014)
        libwww-FM 2.14, SSL-MM 1.4.1, OpenSSL 0.9.8o, ncurses 5.9.20141018(wide)

That sounds like the color-style configuration. For instance, you can
see this by following the link to lynx.cfg near the bottom of the options
menu, and seeing the link for "color-style configuration" near the top
of that page.

You can override the color-style configuration. I made a script "oldlynx"
which is in the sources, e.g.,

        http://lynx.isc.org/lynx2.8.8/breakout/samples/oldlynx

In recent-enough lynx, you can get the same color effect by using an empty
color-style file.

I'm not sure - perhaps an incorrect terminal description (or locale mismatch).

no - you can look for problems using the trace file (with --trace-mask set
to trace configuration changes):

       -trace_mask=value
turn on optional traces, which may result in very large trace
files. Logically OR the values to combine options:

...

              8 configuration (lynx.cfg, .lynxrc, .lynx-keymaps, mime.types
                 and mailcap contents)
