This is okay with 2.8.6rel.1 - are you really using 2.8.5? This might explain things.

I assumed the 2.8.5 was leftover in the optoins (since lynx does not
change it once it's set).  Clearing the field in the options menu will
force it to put in a current string.

My understanding of [O]ptions is that there is no persistent User-Agent setting (marked with (!) indicates this) - so UA string can lie if lynx is aliased as 'lynx -useragent="hello from lynx2.8.5" ' but can't lie otherwise.
