Either I wasn't smart enough or the tools weren't available when I
began appreciating backups and introduced some personal system
with tgz + diff. I don't need a version history though, just a
"restore to last stable" or "what changed since last save" is enough.

Well, if I'm the only one using symlinks that way: I knew how to
fix it for me, so ... maybe there is no general need for spending
more time on it.
