My operating system isn't 8-bit-aware (just 8-bit-clean), and the
display driver is hardwired to iso-8859-1 as a convenience (because
if that weren't, it wouldn't have _any_ non-ascii chars).
And I'm not doing this frequently; furthermore some English-language
webpages on japanese servers are sjis even if they don't contain
any "special" chars.
