lynx-dev progress on pre.2

I'm working concurrently on builds for both lynx and ncurses.  With lynx,
there is one platform where I found a bug (and the machine has no debugger).
My plan is to work on that bug on Saturday, after resolving some other
issues with ncurses.

is my current working set of changes.  There are some documentation changes
on the to-do list, but (aside from the bug mentioned), no other coding fixes.
