This patch (see ftp://invisible-island.net/temp) completes the bug-fixes I
had in mind for dev.17.  There are a couple of enhancement requests I may
have time for; otherwise all that remains for dev.17 is updating the ".po"
files and other documentation features, e.g., the openssl readme file.

( Since everyone except me appears to be on vacation, I'll have to wait til
next week to commit the changes ;-)
