are you sure your server uses exactly this $env to transmit the referer?
i've seen differences many times, even if the server docs announce CGI/1.1
conformity. have you tried dumping the entire environment using simple
"env" or "prinenv"? i use this often in printenv.cgi's if i'm unsure as to
the values of the environment.
