I had a similar problem in OS/390 with the vendor's supplied
curses.  I finally worked around it with some system-specific
code in LYCurses.c.  You might as an experiment try changing:

    #if defined(__MVS__)


    #if ( 1 || defined(__MVS__) )

What flavor of curses are you using?
