Some of these patches are getting to be personal preferences.  As such,
their integration into the general code base needs to be considered
carefully, weighting the benefit the "feature" as opposed to the trouble
and added code involved in ifdefing and/or configuring.  Especially, the
behavior in "b)" is not intuitive to me at all, nor does it correspond with
the behavior of any of the editors or viewers I use on a daily basis.
