The problem is more insidious than just a messed up directory listing.
With straight "ftp" I can almost always go instantly (a second or two) to
most ftp sites in Japan, but with "lynx" it can seemingly take forever to
make a connection. It is sporatic, sometimes works fine, other times Lynx
will stall on a site, and I can go to the same site instantly in another
window multiple times by regular ftp. (Lynx-dev16, slang, Solaris2.6)

"ftp" and "lynx" were executed from the same shell account nearly
simultaneously from different "screen" windows. I do not have any
proxy environment variables nor any settings in lynx.cfg.

I have tried it both ways. (With LANGUAGE=C, gettext doesn't work,
so I hope LANGUAGE should have nothing to do with the problems I am
experiencing.)
This is just a report as something to watch for. At the moment I have
zero time to do debugging. Sorry.
