Although it probably originated before commercialisation, www represents
the marketing approach, not the absence of it. It is there to make
it easy to guess the name of a company's main web server, whereas the
original concept of the web was to give easy access to material wherever
it was held.

None of our internal test servers have www prefixes, and none of our
intranet product systems have them - if they don't just have the customer
account code, they will be named after the product, not the technology.

None of our Xerox printers have www. prefixes, even though they provide
HTTP/HTML (and unfortunately Java) based management and job submission
facilities.
