this may well be part of the problem: cookie support has improved since then.
goto  www.slcc.edu/lynx/release  for 2-8-1 , which may help you;
you could try the latest development version
from  sol.slcc.edu/lynx/current ;
there are precompiled versions too: start at  lynx.browser.org/ .
