jumping into your thread without checking earlier messages (which i read),
using 2-8-2dev.17 on this IRIX 5.3 with  c 50 %  maximum users logged-in,
Lynx downloaded  1,73 M  at avg  c 6,5 KB/s  in  c 4,5 min
-- presumably the transfer is checked, halving the stated speed -- ,
then announced `Download complete' & offered the Save To Disk screen:
there was indeed a corresponding file in  ~/tmp .
NB the stated file size in  www.flora.org/lynx-dev/mailbox/  is  3,1 M .
