I've been doing this for some time (I have a lot of threads going).
It just requires patience.

I'm left with the impression that you don't want to apply my patches
to autoconf.  That's the simplest solution.  I'm using them for
lynx, ncurses, tin and vile (as well as a number of configure scripts
that technically don't need the patch).
