ncurses & slang are test only when you specify the --with-screen option.
the configure script defaults to checking for whatever you've installed
as "curses".

the performance trade-off is a feature of some of the SVr4-style curses
implementations (Lynx 2.7.1 used it, so I added it to the configure script
quite early on).
It turns on some places to use macros rather than functions, and probably
isn't related.
