i don't know how to do it with other communications software:
maybe others who use them can advise you.

i certainly recommend Kermit in general:
it's easy to use, very versatile & i've never had a problem with it;
it boasts its capabilities at charset translations;
it's free, though they like you to buy a manual (i haven't).
you can always download it & try it out, after all.
