"--libdir=" is what to set for where you want lynx.cfg to be installed.
There's an example in INSTALLATION. I think the present ./configure
install path options are good since they offer a lot of flexibility,
i.e., you don't have to worry about one inheriting from another. (I
haven't downloaded the latest yet, so I don't know how the --helpdir
option is working.)

PS I've made a correction to the configure example which is wrong
in the distribution INSTALLATION, but it doesn't concern the directory
options.
PPS Tom, really sorry about the zlib problem I created for myself.
It's solved now, by putting back the symbolic link from libz.so to
libz.so.1.0.4, and ac-0.98 compiles flawlessly on Solaris2.6.
