"ac" stands for autoconf!!!!! All of those OSs you mention are supported.
Read INSTALLATION, Section II, if you haven't been compiling for a while.
"Modifying Makefile" is sort of like driving a Studebaker (Not sure of the
spelling, but I think it's a car the Canadians tried to keep alive for a
while after those foul Yankees gave up on it :-).
