I understand that it's traditional to have the configure at the top
level directory. I was offering up a non-traditional approach that I've
seen at least one other place - nvi, the new version of vi being developed
by K Bostic (ala BSD 4.x the next generation) has all of it's configure
info in a subdirectory. It makes it rather nice to not have the clutter
at the top level.
