Set environment variable "http_proxy" to the proxy URL .
Suppose your proxy is running on proxy.xyz.com on port 8080
then set the http_proxy variable to http://proxy.xyz.com:8080/
i.e. export http_proxy="http://proxy.xyz.com:8080/";
