A new technology that you might want to watch is called
the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) work. Current
DOI Prototype participants include Academic Press, Springer-Verlag, Wiley, and
others. See <URL: http://www.doi.org/ > . The idea is centered around
folk registering documents (or portions of documents) with a central
authority and being assigned a doi. Then the doi is published rather than
the URL. Browsers use the DOI, which goes to a central server which
then redirects one to the current location for the document. The indirection
allows one to be directed into a publisher's charging scheme, etc.
I don't suspect that changes to lynx will be necessary for this mechanism,
but we should be sure to track the work to ensure if it catches on we
take full advantage.
