That's it! Thanks much. My display is set to EUC:
display (C)haracter set : Japanese (EUC),
so at least I know where the EUC is coming from.
The problem is though, if I change the display charset to SJIS,
(same as ISO-2022-JP) then the display is so garbled that I can't
find my way around, and no amount of ^L or ^W will fix the screen
to where I can navigate. I'll keep playing around.
