I don't know that _I_ ever confused them.  The previous problem I had was
ncurses installing itself in a different place than previous and me thus
having two incompatible versions of ncurses.  Perhaps what is needed
in ncurses is some kind of define that identifies ncurses separately from
curses, and then, if lynx builder configures for ncurses, that unique
symbol is checked in the header and a compile error occur.
