as i understand it, Lynx uses the Latin 1 codes,

Lynx is deliberately strict in following internationally agreed standards,
whereas some other browsers are notoriously slap-dash.

you can define other character-sets using  o  (Options) &  lynx.cfg .
see also the extensive help available by entering  h .
(no doubt you are using the latest Lynx 2-7-1).
