I'm planning to make a couple more tests, but afaik, Laura probably wasn't
setting the $CPPFLAGS and $LIBS as I suggested - it worked for me on Linux.
(I've just installed a copy of FreeBSD, and will use that, putting slang in
a non-standard place, having noticed that the /bin/sh on that platform is
more than a little broken).
