I don't think it's so much a special file as a very picky one. :)

I've managed to have Mosaic's "RBM" tags coexist safely within my
universal hotlist.  I just never use Lynx to add or remove a link,
because it seems to regenerate the list itself, causing all my
"RBM" (right button menu) entries to vanish.

As long as I've been careful about the format, I've never had a
problem with hand-editing the lynx bookmark file.
