-- & thanx for your kind offer: i'll send the files FYI, but the problem has
resolved itself today: 2-6 compiled & works (on the surface, at least),
but there are a couple of further notes for lynx-dev.
-- Rick Mallett was correct: when Makefile unzipped, the ln-cont'n \s
in the sgi section ea had a CR added: this happened to ALL the targets
appar'ly. when i removed the CRs fr the sgi section to make 1 long ln,
2-6 compiled straight thro'. HOWEVER, this leaves the fact that anyone else
-- some innocent o/worked sysadmin out there -- w an SGI machine
& the same unzip will run into the same problem (it's NOT the editor).
anyway, my thanx to Rick for his prompt & accurate diagnosis.
-- given Larry's kind offer, may i take it up in a diffr way, wh mt help
a few others; others on lynx-dev mt have a word or two as well:
-- there's a lot of terminology in lynx.cfg , Makefile & userdefs.h
wh is~ immed'ly clear: wd anyone feel up to explicating in 1 or 2 sentences?
-- WAIS is wide-area info (i/net?) system : but what is that?
-- i have SOCKS on my feet, but what are they in the Lynx context?
-- what is my CWIS (if i have one)?
-- what exactly is localhost ? it is where i mt put the help files,
acc to lynx.cfg , but i can~ get Lynx to find them (i've got rd it
by giving the full URL out-&-back to the CHASS site pp)?
-- are DIRED & anonymous of any interest to me (i omitted them),
using 2-6 u my own home dir a/a running a multi-user system?
-- is JUMP merely a special kind of Bookmark File (i left it out)?
-- what is a proxy server? it's mentioned freq'ly on lynx-dev.
-- what are MIME types ? ditto (seems to be someth to do w e-mail).
-- there's a ref to a viewer, eg xv , wh is available on this system:
does that mean that if i had the nec hardware, i cd download via Lynx
a graphic of eg one of Jupiter's moons fr Sky & Telescope
& use xv to look at it?
-- there are 2 items in lynx.cfg wh really are gobbledegook:
look at the paras on LYNX_HOST_NAME & LOCALHOST_ALIAS : wozzitmean?
-- Andrew Kuchling has asked what lynx-dev sb planning for 1997,
& listed half-a-dozen items of pgming. my response is, as previously,
that the current need is for availability & organisation,
not more patches & tweaks. i hope my awkward questions help.
-- 2-6? straight-off, it actually centres headers!
& you can EDIT incorrectly entered URLS! it is 1 Mb , if anyone cares.
-- and to Uwe Koch: the street cars are one of Toronto's delights
-- and an important part of why it works so well as a big city --
but the little drawing below is a trolley bus, of which we are currently
deprived, due to short-sighted management & lack of funds,
and about which we have had a municipal fight since 1982 ...
