        You need to remove -DSOCKS from both SITE_DEFS and SITE_LYDEFS

and I doubt you want the -DNOPORT Tom added to SITE_LYDEFS, since that
restricts you to FTP servers which support PASV, and not all do, but
unfortunately some firewalls can't handle PORT.  If you're not behind
a firewall, Lynx does all the work for a PORT connection, and you should
use it.
