Jokes apart, Ben, the timeout approach should be simpler to implement because it doesn't require you to apply a patch.
If it doesn't suit your needs, the functionality Simon mentioned is available as a patch to lwIP 1.3.0 (links below). So in both case you'll have to upgrade to lwIP 1.3.0, which is a good idea anyway.
