Agreed. I'll give it a try.

Yep, having per contrib/ (arch) optimal implemetations would be preferable.
I've read a similar design recommendation in the mentioned RFC.

I'm prepared to work on an optimised version for the c16x,
I leave the other ports to their respective owners / initiators.
Others may contribute, but I'm not going to commit stuff I can barely test,
or have confidence in.
