It is extremely cumbersome, although may not be so bad now that lwIP has
reached a relatively stable point and is not changing rapidly. When I
needed to do something similar, I simply forked from lwIP and did my own
work, but after they had diverged by some amount I found it was too much
effort to try and merge in new changes from the main branch.
