Am I right in thinking that the main benefit of this is slightly smaller
code?

I'm a bit hesitant about it, but for no good reason other than I shy away
from using the preprocessor in clever ways like this!

Any chance that porters might hit problems if their preprocessor doesn't
support this sort of thing?
