Only because I want to use as little from a C library as we can.
using time(NULL) for srand is as bad as a magic number: if you have many same
devices, they will boot in the same time, so srand will be the same!

I know rand is used for ppp also, but that doesn't make it better ;-)
We have a malloc-replacement, so we also should have a rand replacement.
Calculating the xor for all mac addresses could be as good as seeding rand
with them (as long as we don't use that random value for security reasons!).
